RevOps Tool of the Month - Customer.io
August 2026
It's time for another RevOps Tool of the Month, where we highlight tools making life easier for RevOps and GTM teams.
This month, we're looking at Customer.io!
Customer.io is a customer engagement platform that helps teams build automated journeys across email, push, in-app, SMS, WhatsApp and more.
If your customer journeys are starting to outgrow basic email automation, this one's worth a look.

"More impact from every message."
Why is Customer.io worth a look for RevOps and GTM teams?
As your customer base grows, keeping communication relevant gets harder.
Customer.io gives GTM teams a way to build more sophisticated customer journeys without managing every interaction manually.
Because customer data can feed into the journeys you build, the experience can change as the customer does. That gives teams much more room to automate lifecycle engagement while still keeping it relevant to the person receiving it.
There's also a useful RevOps angle here. Bringing customer data, segmentation, and messaging closer together means the systems
How we're using it
Our use case started with a client that has a large customer base and many end users. Those users can sit within the same account but have completely different roles, use cases and relationships with the product. One person might be highly engaged while another is at a completely different stage of their journey.
That made it difficult to engage customers in a systematic, automated, and, most importantly, relevant way.
Previously, we didn't have an integration with product data that could use events to trigger dynamic customer segments. As a result, campaigns were more ad hoc. They worked, but they weren't happening frequently enough and required more internal resources to manage.
Customer.io gave us another route. Its built-in CDP was a big part of the appeal. We can bring together data from different sources, including product activity, and use that information to shape who enters different journeys. The drag-and-drop editor also makes those journeys relatively straightforward to build, with email, SMS, WhatsApp and in-app messaging available within the platform.
We're still early doors, so we haven't built everything out yet. The plan is to create customer journeys that change based on things like industry, persona, product usage and commercial history.
That could mean triggering a rescue campaign when someone stops using the platform, sending product launches to the users they're actually relevant to, or spotting expansion opportunities earlier based on what's happening across an account.
For a client with this many different users and use cases, that gives us a way to run much more relevant customer engagement without needing the internal resource to manage every campaign manually.
Useful for 🛠️
Lifecycle and Marketing teams
Build more considered onboarding, activation and retention programmes, with messaging that changes as customers move through their journey.
RevOps teams
Put the customer data sitting across your GTM systems to better use and give teams a clearer structure for managing increasingly complex lifecycle automation.
Product-led businesses
Connect product activity with customer communication, so the experience outside your product can keep up with what's happening inside it.
Customer Success teams
Build journeys around key moments in the customer lifecycle and respond earlier when engagement starts to change.
What makes this tool different? 🦄
The segmentation is particularly interesting.
Customer.io's data-driven segments update automatically as customer attributes and behaviours change. Someone can enter a segment when they meet your criteria and leave again when they no longer do.
You can then use those segments throughout your campaigns, including as triggers, filters, and conversion criteria.
For teams used to maintaining static lists or building increasingly complicated workarounds, that gives you much more flexibility as your customer base changes.
As a CRM or RevOps manager, one thing to monitor... 🔍
Your underlying data
Before getting carried away with clever journeys, make sure you're sending Customer.io the right events and attributes. If the underlying data isn't reliable, the automation sitting on top of it won't be either.
Segment logic
Dynamic segments can quickly multiply. Keep naming and criteria organised so someone can still understand why a customer has ended up in a particular journey six months from now.
Journey complexity
Branching gives you plenty of flexibility, but there's a point where more logic simply becomes more logic to maintain. Keep journeys understandable for the people who'll actually own them.
Ownership
Customer.io can sit across Marketing, Product, RevOps and Customer Success. Decide early who owns the data, who owns the journeys and who gets to change what.
Journeys & automation 🧩
Once you've got the foundations in place, there's plenty you can build.
Customer.io's visual workflow builder supports triggers based on segments, events, dates and custom objects. From there, you can introduce delays and conditional branches, run A/B tests and bring different messaging channels into the same workflow.
That includes email, push, in-app messages, SMS and WhatsApp, alongside other supported channels and integrations.
Customer.io has also been adding AI into the building process. Its AI Agent (currently in beta) can build an automation from a prompt, including the triggers, content, timing and logic.
Useful shortcuts, particularly when you're building something from scratch. We'd still want the journey itself mapped out properly before handing the keys over to AI. 😉
Would be better if... 💡 (our take!)
Customer.io is heavily geared towards engaging and managing your existing customer base, which is great for the use cases we've talked about above.
We'd love to see more support for top-of-funnel marketing too. If you could bring in some of the functionality that makes tools like HubSpot Marketing Hub so useful for acquisition, alongside Customer.io's customer engagement capabilities, you'd have much more of the journey covered in one place.
For teams managing both acquisition and customer lifecycle marketing, that would mean fewer tools and less movement between platforms.
Pricing 💲
Customer.io currently has Essentials, Premium and Enterprise plans.
Essentials includes up to 5,000 profiles and 1 million monthly email sends. Premium and Enterprise offer custom profile and messaging allowances, alongside additional functionality and support.
There's also a 14-day free trial, with no credit card required.
It's worth looking beyond profile numbers when comparing the plans. The channels you want to use, the journeys you're building and the level of support your team needs will all affect which tier makes sense.
Long story short
Customer.io is worth a look once your lifecycle journeys start asking more of you than a straightforward email sequence can handle.
There's a lot of flexibility here, particularly for teams with good customer data and a clear idea of the journeys they want to build.
If that's where your GTM setup is heading, Customer.io gives you plenty of room to grow without stitching every stage together yourself.
